Free basketball – but DRIVE SAFELY

by Mike Harris on December 18, 2009

Virginia Tech has cancelled its bowl media today scheduled for tomorrow morning.   Your friendly correspondent had planned to go, then decided to watch the streaming video rather than risk the drive.  But, wisely, the Hokies called the whole thing off.

Not off is the Hokies’ men’s basketball game against Charleston Southern, scheduled for 7 p.m. at Cassell Coliseum.   The Hokies are looking for their ninth victory in 10 games and yours truly planned to get his first look at them.

The school has announced that anyone who can get to the arena safely – emphasis on safely – will be admitted without a ticket.  The Hokies also play on Tuesday against UMBC and then take eight days off before returning home to face Longwood (those games still require a ticket!).   A Kids Club autograph session planned for after tomorrow night’s game will be rescheduled.

Virginia is also home tomorrow for a 7 p.m. game against UNC Wilmington at John Paul Jones Arena.    As of now, the Cavaliers still plan to play.  No word on the ticket situation – don’t show up looking for a freebie and say you read it on Virginia Sports Now!

Here is the start of a release the Cavs sent out today:

It is anticipated the men’s basketball game between UNC Wilmington and Virginia will be played as scheduled at John Paul Jones Arena on Saturday (Dec. 19). The game is scheduled to begin at 7 p.m.

The possibility of inclement weather exists for the Charlottesville area on Saturday, but Atlantic Coast Conference protocol indicates games should be played if both teams and two of the three game officials have arrived at the site. The UNC Wilmington team arrived in Charlottesville Friday afternoon (Dec. 18) and game officials were contacted on Friday alerting them to the possibility of inclement weather so they could adjust their travel plans.

“We want our fans to know that we are planning to play Saturday’s game even in the event of inclement weather,” said Virginia Athletics Director Craig Littlepage. “We also want fans to be aware of the possibility of inclement weather and to check current weather conditions before traveling to the game.”

The Virginia-UNC Wilmington game will be televised by Comcast SportsNet and Comcast SportsNet Plus, and broadcast by the Virginia Sports Radio Network.

Elsewhere in VSN Land:

VCU and Richmond are on the road tomorrow – VCU plays at Tulane at 2 p.m. and Richmond plays Florida in the Orange Bowl Classic at 6:30 p.m.     The Spiders return home for a game Tuesday at noon – yes, noon – against UNC Greensboro.  VCU doesn’t play at home again until Dec. 29 when East Carolina (led by former Rams coach Mack McCarthy) comes to town.

Thanks – should have noted that. And I will be listening to both games.

VCU arrived safely in New Orleans earlier today. I was told by a member of the travel party that it was “t-shirt weather” down there. Must be nice.

Where’s my coverage of the Hokies that I paid a whole 20$ for. Is everything OK?
